Fifteen

The next morning, Jenna and Lauren were so tired they could barely keep their eyes open. They had worked all night, and Lauren had managed to carve the imprint onto the stone.

Many times during the night, the thought occurred to Jenna how incredibly bizarre this situation was. They were trying to build a gateway to the past.

Caitrin and Allison had returned from the village that very evening with good news. Caitrin could borrow the horses any time. Alan did ask what they were going to do with them, but Caitrin simply replied that her guests liked horses very much and wanted to ride a bit. Apparently, that was good enough for Alan.

Under cover of darkness, Jenna and Caitrin went over to the stone to see how deep it was buried and if it could possibly be rolled. The stone was too angular for that, but luckily it wasn't that deep. The two of them braced themselves against one side and even moved it a tiny bit. Caitrin said it felt like sacrilege for her to move the stone, but she knew she had no choice.

As morning fell and Lauren was finishing up, Jenna stretched. "Let's get the other two and test it out."

Lauren was pale with dark circles under her eyes, but she looked satisfied and a little proud.

A short time later, they all stood in front of the stone. Jenna could almost feel the excitement of her friends coursing through her.

"Come on," Allison urged Caitrin, "Try it."

Her friend shook her head. "I need to be alone for this," she reminded the others. "Otherwise, it won't work. And I have to change clothes in case I really do end up there. I want to be prepared."

Soon enough, she returned wearing her brown wool dress. The three friends retreated and waited on the terrace. They didn't have to wait long though, it wasn't long before Caitrin appeared among the trees. She didn't have to say anything, the others could tell by the way she walked and held her head that it hadn't worked.

Lauren burst into tears.

"It's not your fault," Jenna comforted her.

Her friend shook her head. "It's not that," she said. "I'm just so tired, and now we have to do this thing with the horses. And besides that, we're committing a crime."

"It's just a rock, Lauren," Allison said, sounding just as tense as Jenna felt. "How about we all lie down for a bit and make a new plan when we're more rested?"

"I can't sleep," Caitrin said.

"Well, you should," Jenna countered.

Reluctantly, she gave in and the other three also retreated to their rooms.

Caitrin drifted asleep almost as soon as her head hit her pillow. "Only five minutes," she murmured.

Allison was also asleep in her clothes, but she looked determined now that she had a clear plan once again. Jenna had to smile. Lauren had curled up, exhausted, and looked like a little kitten.

Jenna also lay down, but she couldn't sleep. Her eyes wandered to her cell phone, but she didn't touch it.
